Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) more commonly known as “scraping”, this technique came from an ancient Chinese Medicine called Gau Sha. ‘Gua’ means scrape, and ‘Sha’ means sand.” This technique is a nonspecific soft tissue treatment that involves scraping a dull blade over the skin in strokes to relax stiff muscles and promote the primary healing phase. It’s common that while the blade run over the skin, and the patient feel a bumpy sensation under the skin, as if there is small pebbles or sand under it. As treatment continues, the sandy feeling lessens, as does the soft tissue dysfunction with it.
